Politicians and media fail the community lets get rid of the Federal Government

Not only are established political parties failing the community, mainstream media is just as bad. Politicians pay a price for ignoring the wishes of the people by losing votes – which is why the coalition government only scraped back into government by one seat at the last election. Media businesses pay a price by losing readers, viewers or listeners and that hits their revenue. Mainstream media players didn't realise the extent of voter apathy in Australia which resulted in huge support for independent parliamentarians and minor parties. They also had an extreme bias against Donald Trump's run in the US Presidential election – and now can't forgive him for winning and making them look like turkeys. Is it any wonder than mainstream media is in the doldrums as a growing number of people turn to internet sources and social media for their regular news feeds? Blogs and Facebook are now more reliable sources of news than newspapers, or television. Cheque-book journalism such as conducted by the 60 Minutes program has tarnished an already dubious image of TV current affairs shows and the loss of credibility is not confined to commercial networks. The ABC has also suffered. News and current affairs matters are now treated as just a part of the entertainment mix. The ABC's Q and A show is more akin to a low quality reality TV offering rather than a current affairs program. And presenters (or 'talent') are more interested in enhancing their profiles and marketability than in delivering news. It's way past time for some fundamental changes to our constitution to reduce costs for the economy. We don't need the current duplication of services in Canberra and the States. About the only function which needs to be administered Federally is defence. State Governments deliver all other services – including health and education so it makes no sense to pay for an army of bureaucrats and Ministers in Canberra who do little but polish chairs with their backsides and hold out their hands to grab our money. The duties of a Federal Government could be adequately performed by the Council of Australian Governments COAG. This would save billions of dollars every year.Politicians keep saying that paying aged pension isn't sustainable. They ignore the fact that paying politicians all the perks they get is even less sustainable! The Age of Entitlements is over for most Australians – but not for politicians. They must be made to shoulder their responsibilities. Scrap political pensions - they can fund their own retirement plans, just like normal people.
