Politics is in decline - just like television

Declining standards seem to be a factor in most facets of modern life – just look at the levels of corruption and misbehaviour in politics, the banking system and business generally. And then there’s the real test – free-to- air television with a plethora of reality shows for the brain-dead. Even the ABC gets in on the act with a programme like Q&A which masquerades as a serious discussion panel but usually is just a free opportunity for politicians to peddle their particular foibles and philosophies. The ABC’s breakfast show underwent a transformation to turn into pale copy of the Channel 7 show, Sunrise. There was a ray of hope for entertainment with the establishment of Channel 76 Flix which seemed to promise the escapism of endless movies. But what does it deliver – a churning of a handful of films like 'The Master Race', 'Tall in the Saddle', 'Trail Street, ' "The Navy comes Through," "Marine Raiders" and 'Action in Arabia'. Hundreds of thousands of film have been made – why don’t those in charge show a good variety?

The Shire participated in a webinar set up by the Victorian National Parks Association on behalf of a handful of individuals calling themselves Save Westernport Woodlands.The purpose of the webinar was to promote claims that the Shire’s proposed planning overlay was needed to protect the woodland. Politicians will fail to address real issues at the CEDA State of the Nation Conference

Politicians are likely to demonstrate their inability to grasp economic realities at the State of the Nation Conference being held in Canberra by the Committee for Economic Development Australia. Both the Government and opposition have demonstrated that they have no agendas which have any hope of returning the budget to surplus in the foreseeable future. Both sides of politics are unable understand the fundamental issue of cutting spending and are locked into an irrational time-warp dream of perpetual economic growth to drag us out of our economic woes. They need to address realities, not illusions and should be looking at adopting a steady-state economic model proposed by John Stuart Mill. Such economies are not driven by booms and busts but are stable or mildly fluctuating in size.Steady State Economics presents a different view of how we could run the world, instead of chasing the illusion of perpetual growth. Sand Strategy protects environment and allows resource extraction

  Comments by Ken Henry, Chair of the Australian Climate and Biodiversity Foundation, about Australia's environmental protection laws failing to stop the degradation of our natural environment really hit home. Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, he argued that the failure held back economic growth. The need for a better approach to planning and environmental issues has been apparent for some time. The community in Bass Coast Shire recognised this in the early 1990’s when plans were revealed for major sand extraction operations in the district. The community was adamant that a landscape-scale approach to planning should be introduced to limit cumulative impacts rather than the existing policy which only allowed each planning application to be considered in isolation.
