Australia's Federation experiment has not worked . we need a new Constitution

The Federation experiment has failed.

Australia’s constitution has been trashed by State overnments locking down borders. It’s clear that the illusion of Australia being one country caanot be sustained. We are as loose group of indepoendent States. It’s time to reducve the cost of Government by accpeting reality and ending the Federation. WE don’y need the duplication of maintaining ba Federal Gove4rnment as well as a host of state politiciands and bureaucrats.

Bass Coast Shire Stuffs up again

Image
Bass Coast Shire is at it again! Councillors and senior staff have no idea about their legal obligations or planning law. The Shire participated in a webinar set up by the Victorian National Parks Association on behalf of a handful of individuals calling themselves Save Westernport Woodlands. The purpose of the webinar was to promote claims that the Shire’s proposed planning overlay was needed to protect the woodland. The native vegetation on public land is already fully protected as a result of the actions of the Grantville community and South Gippsland Conservation Society in successfully lobbying the State Government to develop and implement an effective sand extraction strategy for the region. After lengthy research and consultation The State Government gazetted the Regional Sand Extraction Strategy, Lang to Grantville which identified and protected the wildlife corridor which some now refer to as a biolink. The Strategy gave Council the strongest planning tools to prevent the...

Politicians will fail to address real issues at the CEDA State of the Nation Conference

Politicians are likely to demonstrate their inability to grasp economic realities at the State of the Nation Conference being held in Canberra by the Committee for Economic Development Australia. Both the Government and opposition have demonstrated that they have no agendas which have any hope of returning the budget to surplus in the foreseeable future. Both sides of politics are unable understand the fundamental issue of cutting spending and are locked into an irrational time-warp dream of perpetual economic growth to drag us out of our economic woes. They need to address realities, not illusions and should be looking at adopting a steady-state economic model proposed by John Stuart Mill. Such economies are not driven by booms and busts but are stable or mildly fluctuating in size.Steady State Economics presents a different view of how we could run the world, instead of chasing the illusion of perpetual growth. It offers the concept of an economy that is completely sustainable. A co...

Sand Strategy protects environment and allows resource extraction

Comments by Ken Henry, Chair of the Australian Climate and Biodiversity Foundation, about Australia's environmental protection laws failing to stop the degradation of our natural environment really hit home. Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, he argued that the failure held back economic growth. The need for a better approach to planning and environmental issues has been apparent for some time. The community in Bass Coast Shire recognised this in the early 1990’s when plans were revealed for major sand extraction operations in the district. The community was adamant that a landscape-scale approach to planning should be introduced to limit cumulative impacts rather than the existing policy which only allowed each planning application to be considered in isolation. Residents formed the Grantville Action Group and gathered data to demonstrate the need for a massive change in planning and enviromental regulations. The Minister for Planning agreed and a working group was...
