New defence agreement with US and UK

Australia has agreed a new defence pact with the US and the UK which will allow it to access key technical war material – including building nuclear submarines. The new pact known as AUKUS will share advanced technology between the partners. The agreement is likely to isolate Australia from regional neighbours as it will be seen as increasing the level of potential conflict.

It is not known how much this agreement will cost Australian taxpayers but it will clearly dwarf current defence spending.Whatever the cost, it will likely be a complete waste of money as a small number of nuclear powereed submarine will not enhance our military power. Submarines are intended as an auxiliary force to protect a navy proper and civilian shipping. Trouble is we have no navy proper. We have a handfull ofdestroyers and eight frigates, plus a few coastal vessels. Our airforce is little better!
