Australians panic over Covid19 scare

The days of Australia being known as ‘the lucky country’ are long gone, now the world sees us as a ‘stupid bunch’ with headlines everywhere about Australians panic buying toilet rolls because of corona virus fears. But no-one should really be surprised because Australians have demonstrated apathy and a complete disregard for reality. Our political leaders squandered successive budget surpluses as we rode on the sheeps’ back and various mineral booms. If thoses surpluses had been retained in a future fund, we would have been able to ride out out any global financial storm. Instead our citizens are panicked into irrational behaviour – clearing supermarket shelves of toilet paper. If they expect some cataclysm. it would more sense for them to stockpile food. What a bunch of turkeys!

Politicians will fail to address real issues at the CEDA State of the Nation Conference

Politicians are likely to demonstrate their inability to grasp economic realities at the State of the Nation Conference being held in Canberra by the Committee for Economic Development Australia. Both the Government and opposition have demonstrated that they have no agendas which have any hope of returning the budget to surplus in the foreseeable future. Both sides of politics are unable understand the fundamental issue of cutting spending and are locked into an irrational time-warp dream of perpetual economic growth to drag us out of our economic woes. They need to address realities, not illusions and should be looking at adopting a steady-state economic model proposed by John Stuart Mill. Sand Strategy protects environment and allows resource extraction

  Comments by Ken Henry, Chair of the Australian Climate and Biodiversity Foundation, about Australia's environmental protection laws failing to stop the degradation of our natural environment really hit home. Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, he argued that the failure held back economic growth. The need for a better approach to planning and environmental issues has been apparent for some time. The community in Bass Coast Shire recognised this in the early 1990’s when plans were revealed for major sand extraction operations in the district. The community was adamant that a landscape-scale approach to planning should be introduced to limit cumulative impacts rather than the existing policy which only allowed each planning application to be considered in isolation.
