Heads need to roll over the way Djokovic has been treated

Whatever the outcome of the Federal Court hearing into the Government decision to cancel the visa of world number one Tennis player Novak Djokovic, Australia is seen as both a pathetic joke and a hotbed of incompetence which shows us to be at the bottom of the pile of third world countries.Australia’s inhumane treatment of refugees and asylum seekers is now being discussed openly following the incarceration of world tennis champion Novak Djokovic in a hotel normally used for immigration detention.

Technical issues forced delays to the hearing today and the live stream link provided by the court crashed because it couldn't cope with the number of people trying to view proceedings.

When it did get underway, the judge questioned what more the nine-time champion could have done to enter Australia. The actions of the Australian Government are a total embarrasment for those of us who believe in fair play.

The 34-year-old Serbian had been issued a visa to enter the country after providing evidence that he had a medical reason not to get vaccinated against COVID-19.But his visa was suddenly cancelled when he arrived late on Wednesday and he has been in immigration detention since Thursday morning. "What more could this man have done?" Judge Anthony Kelly asked. The Australian and Victorian State Governments both need to cut out some of their deadwood. Politicians and bureaucrats need to be held accountable for their inability to behave like decent human beings. The days have long gone when Australia could be proud of its "fair go" image and the concept of "mateship" Prime Ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott ended that with their treatment of refugees. Subsequent Governments have maintained those policies.

  1. Now Djokovic has won the case and his visa has been restored. Government ministers are considering cancelling his vis for ma second time. It they do, hopefully politicians will be doing some jail time!
